Occupational Health and Safety

The Mechanobiology Institute Safety Committees are comprised of representatives from all the various lab groups working within the Institute. Committees have been formed to attend to both safety policies and management systems. The goal of our committees is to enhance and maintain a safe working environment that is conducive for research and collaboration.

Regulatory compliance
The Mechanobiology Institute takes measures to achieve and maintain
compliance with applicable national and university safety and health laws, guidelines and good
 practices.

Safety Management System (SMS)
The Mechanobiology Institute maintains an effective and
efficient SMS to ensure that risks are kept to an acceptable level and measures are put in place
to contain and mitigate risks that cannot be eliminated.

Mandatory safety training
The Mechanobiology Institute ensures that all occupants receive
appropriate and adequate training, including on-the-job supervision to ensure their competency in
the workplace.

Responsibility
Every occupant of MBI’s laboratories  has a role to play in ensuring the safety policy is implemented successfully. Senior staff are responsible for
ensuring those working under their supervision are adequately trained and supervised, and
contractors, vendors and visitors are briefed on safety issues. MBI is
responsible for ensuring that steps are taken to ensure the safety and minimize health risk of all persons within the
T-Lab.

Identification of hazards
Risk assessment and mitigation has been incorporated into daily operations.
All lab users are encouraged to reduce the production of waste and the use of toxic materials, to prevent pollution, and to conserve and
reuse resources, as is feasible.

Incident and accident investigation
All incidents and accidents are to be reported and investigated to determine the root cause(s) to
prevent recurrence.

Communication
The policy shall be communicated to all occupants and feedback obtained through regular dialogue sessions.

Continual improvements
The Mechanobiology Institute strives to continually measure and improve its environmental, safety and health
performance through its Safety Management System (SMS). Regular review of the SMS, policies and standards will be carried out to ensure
that they are current and in compliance with all applicable regulations.
